Facebook, TikTok fail to block Political Ads Misinformation –Report
An investigation conducted by Global human right watchdog, Global Witness and Cybersecurity for Democracy Team (C4D) has revealed that the Social media giants, Facebook and TikTok had failed to detect and remove election disinformation during the US midterm election.
The report exposed the contrasting result and their inability to catch sight of election misinformation from the two social media giants.
The research was conducted at New York University.
In the experiment, the researchers submitted 20 ads with inaccurate claims to Facebook, TikTok, and Youtube targeting Arizona and Georgia.
Im at statement available on its website, noted that TikTok, which bearly’ approved political ad was ‘fared worst’, which endorsed 90% of ads containing outright false and misleading election misinformation.
The ads, contained several false information about voting days extension, designed to discourage voters turnout, claiming election result could be hacked or outcome was pre-decide.
Laura Edelson, Co-director of NYU’s C4D states : ” YouTube in out experiment demonstrates that detecting damage election disinformation isn’t impossible.
“we call on Facebook and TikTok to do better: stop bad information about election before it get to voters.”
