Inferno at Kano INEC office , destroys ICT Dept
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Kano State went up in flames yesterday and property worth millions of naira were destroyed.
The inferno that gutted the hajj camp headquarters in the early hours razed the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) department and part of the administrative area, Newsmen learnt.
The unfortunate incident started while some senior electoral officers of the commission were attending a seminar at the head office.
Although spokesperson for INEC was not available at the time of filing the report, a source at the commission said the fire started in the early hours of Tuesday and that it took the intervention of the men of the fire service to rescue the situation
“While the staff of the commission were directed to stay by, Electoral Officers (EOs) from local councils across the state undergoing training at the commission were asked to go home,” a source told The Guardian
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, said the fire was put out after several hours.
Abdullahi confirmed that the fire, which started about 10.30 a.m., affected the ICT office and a section of the administrative department of the commission.
“Though no life was lost, the inferno destroyed the ICT office and a block in the administrative office of the commission,” he said. He also said it was the quick intervention of the state Fire Service, Federal Fire Service and Airport Fire Service that prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the building.
