How FG is Changing Global Perception About Nigeria – Minister
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has outlined Nigeria’s efforts to reshape its global image despite the challenges posed by its diversity.
The minister who was represented by the President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Dr. Ike Neliaku at the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management conference today in Bali, Indonesia.
The minister emphasized the vital role of public relations in harnessing the nation’s resilience and creativity to promote unity and a strong national identity.
Highlighting Nigeria’s 500 languages and rich cultural heritage, Idris acknowledged the complexity of creating a cohesive narrative. “Nigeria is a nation filled with boundless energy—from the bustling streets of Lagos to the serene landscapes of Yankari National Park,” he stated.
However, he noted that the challenge lies in channeling this vibrancy into a unified identity that resonates globally.
He said that Nigeria is also Changing Perception, through strategic public relations campaigns like Rebranding Nigeria, highlighting achievements in technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship, including the rise of Nigerian unicorn startups.
He also celebrated the success of initiatives like Lagos Fashion Week, the National Arts Festival, and the Africa International Film Festival in showcasing Nigeria’s heritage to the world. He stressed the importance of the Nigerian diaspora—over 17 million strong—as vital contributors to reshaping global perceptions of the country.
“Nigeria has faced its share of challenges, from corruption to inequality, but every challenge presents an opportunity for transformation,” he remarked. “Public relations is not just about managing perceptions; it’s about telling authentic stories of resilience and innovation that define who we are.”
